Story-line and background information

Troy, or rather the Odyssey (Homer)
Fact: A short history of Athens (up to the time of our story)
Language proficiency

Like a small child who lives in the present and has no notion of time past nor future, we continue to function in the present only. But we become much more proficient and elaborate in expressing ourselves. Using forms called "middle voice" for instance. Nice name. Middle between what extremes?
And we learn how to say:
I see you hiding behind .....
They made a lot of noise shouting, clapping, hissing, stamping their feet.
That is, we use participles. Wouldn't you just love to be able to say that in Greek? You wouldn't? Of course you would. Participles are used a lot in Greek, more than in English, for they make sentences much shorter and to the point. And the Greek were notoriously fond of rhetoric and nice turns of phrase.

We build upon our basic knowledge of cases and broaden our arsenal of words, which means we have to improve and extend our handling of declensions:

       ἡ  κόρη, θάλαττα...     being 1st ( -a declension)
       ὁ  δοῦλος ...               being 2nd ( -o declension)
ὁ παῖς, ἡ μήτηρ...     being 3rd (and last)

And we learn to count (at last!). τέλος δὲ μανθάνομεν τοὺς ἀριθμούς.
