Now the 1st dancing group comes forward into the dancing circle praising the deeds of Dionysus. And so Melitta is filled with wonder watching and rejoices hearing. Because the group dances so beautifully. 5 groups of boys, and 5 of men compete one after the other [in order] and they all dance excellently. When the 10th dance is over the winners receive their garlands and all those present rush out of the theatre.

Make sure you know what the following words represent in actual life

  • ἡ ὀρχήστρα lead to 'orchestra' but was the ring where dancing was performed.
    [ὀρχέομαι] ὀρχοῦμαι to dance
    χορεύομαι to dance in a chorus
  • ἐφεξῆς in order, in turn, one after the other
    τρεῖς χοροὶ ἐφεξῆς ἀγωνίζονται 
       πρότερον ὁ πρῶτος 
       ὕστερον ὁ δεύτερος 
       τέλος δὲ ὁ τρίτος 
    ἄλλοι τρεῖς χοροὶ ἐφεξῆς χοροῦσιν 
    τῷ μὲν τετάρτῳ ὁ πέμπτος ἕπεται, 
       τῷ δὲ πέμπτῳ ὁ ἕκτος 
  • ὁρῶμεν τοὺς σαλπιγκτὰς προσχωροῦντας 
       σαλπίζουσιν 
       ἄρχονται οἱ ἀγῶνες 
    πάντες οἱ θεώμενοι θαυμάζουσιν 
    καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες, καὶ οἱ παῖδες εὖ χορεύουσιν 
       οὐ μόνον εὖ, ἀλλὰ ἄριστα γε. 
    ἄριστοί εἰσιν οἱ χορευταί     - ὁ χορευτής the (chorus) dancer
  • ὁ Στέφανος Greek for Stephen, the 'crowned one'
    They crown their heroes with garlands of laurel =  ἡ δαφνή, τῆς δαφνῆς 
    So that is what Daphne means, Laurel.
       καὶ οἱ Ῥωμαῖοι στεφάνους δαφνῆς λαμβάνουσιν 
       τοῖς νικῶσι στεφάνους δαφνῆς παρέχουσιν.
       τοὺς νικῶντας στεφάνοις δαφνῆς τιμῶσιν. 
  • πάρειμι to be there/present, opposite being ἄπειμι
    πάντες οἱ παρόντες 
    πολλοὶ πάρεισιν
    ἐγὼ πάρειμι. παρὼν ἐγὼ, ὁ δοῦλος ἐργάζεται 
    σὺ ἄπει. ἄπων σὺ, ὁ δοῦλος, ἀργὸς ὢν,
    οὐδὲν ποιεῖ, ἀλλὰ καθεύδει.
  • εὐφημεîν
    πολλοὶ πολίται πάρεισιν.
       πάντες οἱ παρόντες εὐφημοῦσιν ὅτε ὁ κήρυξ κελεύει αὐτοὺς εὐφημεîν, λέγων· εὐφημεῖτε, ὦ πολῖται. 
  • ὁ ἀγών, τοῦ ἀγῶνος,
     ἡ ἀρχή     the beginning
    πρὸ τῆς τῶν ἀγώνων ἀρχῆς τὰς πύλας ἀνοίγουσιν
       καὶ οἱ ἄνθρωποι εἰσέρχονται σπεύδοντες
    μετὰ δὲ τοὺς ἀγῶνας σπεύδουσιν ἐξέρχεσθαι·
    οἱ μὲν οἴκοι ἐπανιέναι ἐν νῷ ἔχοντες,
    οἱ δὲ οἶνον πίνειν καὶ κωμάζειν [ἐν νῷ ἔχοντες].

    τέρπονται οἱ θεωροῦντες θεώμενοί τε καὶ ἀκούοντες.
