2nd Paragraph

Translation

But Xerxes, having arrived at the narrows with a very large army indeed, remained inactive for 4 days; for he hoped the Greeks would run away when they'd seen the [sheer] mass of his army. But on the 5th day - for the Greeks were still remaining motionless - he ordered his army to attack at once. But the Greeks (who were) fighting very bravely were holding the barbarians in check. Finally the king (Xerxes) sent (into battle) the Persians whom he used to call the Immortals (and) who were the bravest of his soldiers, in the hope that these at least would easily defeat the Greeks. But even when these joined battle they didn't fare any better than the others, fighting (as they were) in the narrow approaches and not able to make use of their number. And the king, watching the fight, leaped to his feet from his throne 3 times, as they say, fearing for his army.
