2nd Paragraph

Translation

And so the barbarians attacked and the Spartans fought against enemies many times their number and they killed a great many indeed; but many others of the Greeks fell as well as Leonidas himself, as a very brave man. Finally the Persians who had crossed the mountains arrived and attacked from the rear. And then the Spartans retreated into the narrow part of the road and kept fighting there till they all fell. And after the war the Greeks buried the 300 where they had fallen and made a monument to Leonidas, a stone lion, that it is still possible to see even now. And they wrote this inscription on a tombstone made of stone:
Stranger, announce to the Lacedaemonians that here we lie, obeying their words (instructions).
