2nd Paragraph

Translation

Meanwhile the generals of the Greeks who had gathered at Salamis were so afraid that they wanted to run away to the Peloponnese: but Themistokles stood up in the council and said that even now they could* defeat the enemy: for, fighting in the straits the Persians would * not be able to make use of their crowd (=superior number); and that therefore it was* necessary to force them to join battle there. (in the straits, that is).

*   "can, will, is" in Greek, because the actual words used by Themistokles were:

"We can defeat them."
"The Persians will not be able to..."
"Therefore it is necessary."
And Greek keeps the same time in reported speech as in direct.
