Translation of Text 3bMeanwhile Philip approaches; Philip is the son of Dikaiopolis, a big boy and brave too; and he's bringing dinner to his father. When he walks into the field, he calls his father and says: Come here, father; look - I bring your dinner. So don't work any longer but sit down and eat. So his father leaves his plough and calls his slave. And so they sit together and eat. And after the meal Dikaiopolis says: Stay, child, and help. Take the seed and sow it in the ground. And you, Xanthias, dig the stones and carry them out of the field. For many are the stones and it is scarcely possible to plough. As for Xanthias: "But it isn't possible to carry out so many stones." And Dikaiopolis, "Don't talk nonsense, Xanthias, but work." And so father and son and slave work. At last the sun* goes down and the men* don't work any longer but** (loosen the oxen* and leave the plough* in the field) and*** (slowly walk towards their home). * the sun does one thing, the men do another |
