Women

Always bear in mind that these are generalizations, on the whole women...

Paragraph 1

What rights did women have in Greek society? Think of certain countries where right now, 2500 years later, women are no better off.
What about "their greatest glory"?

Paragraphs 2, 3

What about their role? their duties?
And now? Have duties of women changed all that much? How many are there that go out to work and then come home to household chores, while husbands rest or play?

Paragraphs 4, 5

Marriage: when? why? how?
And now? no more arranged marriages? Not all was bad though. Bear in mind that people didn't know anything else, that was the way society was organized. Women in other countries weren't treated any differently, rather worse in fact, still are for that matter.

To understand and appreciate a language we must know something about the people speaking it: their history (what happened to them?), their geography (what sort of place are they living in?), their social and political organization, their religious beliefs: all are important in shaping the language they use to express their needs, their dreams and aspirations. Try and find out a little more about them and always have a map ready to look up references to places. It makes for clearer understanding and easier remembering. And always have pencil and paper ready for jotting down ideas, words, structures, queries and observations. The more active your participation, the more enjoyable and profitable your learning.
