Lesson 7a: First paragraph

Translation paragraph 1

When Murrine finishes the story, Melitta says: "How beautiful is the story, tell us some other story, mother." But Murrine says: "No, for now I have in mind to prepare dinner." And so Melitta weeps, but Philip, "Don't cry, Melitta," he says, "for I want to tell you a beautiful tale about a much-travelled man, Odysseus by name."

Words and expressions

First make sure you can say the word to label the object, the reality. So repeat each word long enough to be able to say it fluently and with meaning.
When you say " δακρύει " you must imagine a child, woman, man, cat or bird actually crying, with tears running down their cheeks, their chin, or hear their piteous cries resounding in your ears...
When you say " περαίνω " you must think of finishing something, story, piece of work, detective novel and state the fact: "I finish" whatever it is that you finish.

εἰπέ ἡμῖν ἄλλον τινὰ μῦθον , ὦ μήτερ.

εἰπέ μοι , ὦ παἶ 
εἴπετέ μοι , ὦ παῖδες 
εἰπέτε ἡμῖν , ὦ φίλοι 
ἐθέλω εἰπεῖν σοι  I want to tell you once (not all the time, again and again), just this once
 

τί ἐν νῷ ἔχεις ποιεῖν ; 

τὸ δεῖπνον παρασκευάζειν
What else do you intend to παρασκευάζειν ?
τί παρασκευάζεις ; 
τίς παρασκευάζει τὰ δεῖπνα ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ σου ;
 

τί ἄλλο ἐν νῷ ἔχεις ποιεῖν ; 

τὸν κῆπον σκάπτειν ; dig the garden
εἰς τὰς Ἀθήνας πορεύεσθαι ; 
τὸ μάθημα παρασκευάζειν ; prepare the lesson
 

ἡ μὲν οὖν Μέλιττα δακρύει 

Why οὖν ?
ἡ γὰρ μήτηρ οὐκ ἐθέλει ἄλλον τινὰ μῦθον εἰπεῖν 
 

περὶ ἀνδρὸς πολυτρόπου , ὀνόματι Ὀδυσσέως
