Lesson 7b: First Paragraph

Translation

And soon they hear a very loud noise and in comes a terrifying giant; for he is a monster: one eye is [placed] in the middle of his forehead. So Odysseus and his companions are very afraid and flee into the far corner of the cave. As for the giant he first drives the flocks into the cave, and when all are inside, picks up a very big rock and places [it] into the entrance of the cave. And now he first milks the flocks, then lights a fire. So of course he sees Odysseus and his companions and: O strangers, he shouts, who are you and from where are you sailing?

Words and Expressions

ὁ ψόφος the noise we saw in lesson 5b

πολὺν ψόφον ἀκούουσιν
τὰ μῆλα πολὺν θόρυβον ποιεῖ
 

γίγας φοβερός  a terrifying giant

φοβοῦμαι, I fear, gave us φοβερός 
and γίγας, γίγαντος gave us gíant
So here they: ἀκούουσι ψόφον μέγιστον because
 ὁ γὰρ Κύκλωψ γίγας ἐστὶ καὶ θόρυβον μέγιστον τε καὶ φοβερὸν ποιεῖ
ἄνθρωπος μέγιστος γίγας ἐστίν.
οἱ μὲν γίγαντες φοβεροί εἰσιν, ἡμεῖς δὲ ἀνδρεῖοί ἐσμεν, οὔκουν τοὺς γίγαντας φοβούμεθα.
 

πελώριος, a monster

ὁ λύκος θήριόν ἐστιν.
ὁ Μινώταυρος θήριόν τε καὶ πελώριός ἐστιν.
ὁ Κύκλωψ καὶ ὁ Frankenstein πελώριοί εἰσιν.
 

ἐν μέσῳ τῷ μετώπῳ, in the middle of his forehead

τὸ μέτωπον, τοῦ μετώπου  is my forehead
τὸ πρόσωπον, τοῦ προσώπου is my face
So my nose is ἐν μέσῳ τῷ προσώπῳ
Indian women often have a spot of colour (different colour for different occasion)
ἐν μέσῳ τῷ μετώπῳ
ὁ νῦν οἶκος μου ἐν μέσῳ κήπῳ ἐστίν in the middle of a garden.
But I used to live  ἐν μέσῃ πόλει, (in the middle of a town) 
ἐν μέσῳ τῷ  ἄστει, Genève ὀνόματι
 

ὁ τοῦ ἄντρου μυχός the far corner of the cave

Don't confuse:
ὁ μόσχος the little calf in the picture of chapter 1a
ὁ μόχλος the bolt they cut through in lesson six
ὁ μυχός the hideout, innermost corner
ὁ μόσχος ἐν τῷ μυχῷ ὁρᾷ τὸν μόχλον ἀλλὰ ἀγνοεῖ πῶς ἐξέρχεσθαι .
 

ἔνδον inside

ἔνδον νὺξ καὶ σκότος darkness, lesson six
ἔξω ἥμερα καὶ φώς light, gave us photo
ἆρ' ἐθέλεις ἔνδον μένειν;
 

ἡ εἴσοδος the way in
ἡ ἔξοδος the way out

Usuallyἡ εἴσοδος ἔξοδος καί ἐστιν
πρὸς τῇ εἰσόδῳ a soldier stands on guard duty

 

ἀμέλγω I milk

In Latin I could never remember whether "to milk" was mulgere or mulcere, now I know, it has to be mulgere, with a g like ἀμέλγειν.
ἀμέλγομεν οἶς τε καὶ αἶγας, ἀλλὰ οὐ δυνατόν ἐστιν ἀμέλγειν τοὺς βοῦς (oxen),ἀμέλγομεν τὰς μόνον βοῦς.
Just picture someone milking and say ἀμέλγει, ἀμέλγουσιν...
πῶς ἀμέλγει; ταχέως; βραδέως; κακῶς;
 

καίω, πῦρ καίω I light a fire

πῦρ καίομεν when it is cold
Again, imagine someone lighting something, call it καίει , καίουσιν....
Do not get it confused with
ὁ Ξανθίας πταίει· σκαιός ἐστιν καὶ καταβάλλει τόν λίθον
Xanthias stumbles: he is clumsy and drops the stone (on Dikaiopolis' foot)
καὶ ἡ Μέλιττα σκαιά ἐστιν · πταίει και θραύει τὴν ὑδρίαν
