Translation

And so, rejoicing, they all follow the procession towards the sacred precinct of the god. When they get there the priest and the youths carry the statue of the god into the temple whereas the attendants lead the sacrificial victims towards the altar. And then the herald proclaiming, "keep holy silence, citizens", he says. And so the whole crowd is silent and waits quietly.

  • εὐφημέω is εὐ meaning 'well' and
    εὐφημέω is φημί, I say, I speak:
    So:
    • either saying words of good omen
    • or keeping holy silence so as to avoid improper words
    ἡ εὐφημία, τῆς εὐφημίας means
    • religious silence
    • good reputation (being well spoken of)
    which gave us our: euphemism
  • ὁ κῆρυξ κηρύττει τῷ δήμῳ 
    So that's what a herald does: proclaims, heralds.
