  • Every morning I'd wake up and get up very early.
  • Our mother also woke up and got up.
  • She then woke up father and prepared breakfast.
  • We sat down round the table.
  • Since we were Christians we prayed to God.
  • We ate in silence.
  • Why didn't we converse with one another?
  • Father didn't want [us] to, he wanted to eat in peace and quiet.
  • Father was difficult and so was I.
  • My sisters, being small, obeyed well but I was strong and energetic (hyperactive in fact) and never obeyed anybody.
  • But even I was silent while we ate.
  • After the meal father left for work first.
  • He worked in some bank.
  • I also set out early for school.
  • Not because I liked school but because I wanted to play with my friends.
  • My sisters went to another school.

Translation of Exercise 8:

  • While my parents were working I was obliged to watch my sisters.
  • My sisters used to follow me everywhere.
  • I often got angry because they always wanted to do everything I was doing.
  • Every year Minos received 7 young men and 7 maidens and gave them to the Minotaur to eat.
    The Minotaur lived in the labyrinth (he doesn't live there any longer now!)
  • The Athenians were locked up in the labyrinth.
    They were advancing in the dark.
    They began to smell the monster's breath.
    The Minotaur was there. He was terrifying.
    Odysseus and the Minotaur started fighting.
    They went on fighting for a long time.
    In the end Odysseus killed the Minotaur.
