Present Indicative: Contract Verbs

Some verbs in do not contract the stem unless the ending begins with an . They are the very short ones, with a stem of only one syllable:

chapter 6a: πλέ-ω, I sail
chapter 10: χέ-ω, I pour
chapter 10: κατα-χέω, I pour something down onto.
chapter 10: This looks like an exception, 3 syllables, but of course it isn't.
chapter 10: It is prefix κατα + verb χέ-ω
chapter 10: πνέ-ω, I breathe
chapter 10: (remember ὀσφραίνονται τὸ τοῦ θηρίου πνεῦμα (breath)
chapter 10: ἀνα-πνέω, I breathe again, recover

 
 
  Present Tense: sails, is sailing 
  
πλ ω    stays  πλ ω 
πλ εις    becomes  πλ εῖς 
πλ ει    becomes  πλ εῖ 
πλ ομεν    stays  πλ ομεν 
πλ ετε    becomes  πλ εῖτε 
πλ ουσιν    stays  πλ ουσιν 
 
 Infinitive: to sail
πλ ειν   becomes  πλ εῖν
 
 Imperative: go on, sail!
πλ ε   becomes  πλ εῖ
πλ ετε    becomes  πλ εῖτε
